Job Title: Research Associate: Module Development (App Development)

Job Description: The Human Biology Program and Department of Computer Science are currently seeking applications for online module developers in support of a new educational initative. You will work under the supervision of Professors Alice Gao, David Liu, and Naomi Levy-Strumpf to create online educational modules for students in biotechnology, computing, and related disciplines. Your content focus will be application design, with a focus on mobile applications. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Designing and refining module learning objectives and creating a curriculum map.
  • Creating module content, including written documents, program code, diagrams, and short videos.
  • Crafting homework exercises and sample solutions.
  • Developing module teaching guides to facilitate the integration of the modules into classroom instruction.
  • Working in a small team and participating in weekly meetings with the project faculty leads to report on your progress and receive feedback.
The initial term of the position will be from August 1 2023 to January 31 2024, with an expectation of working at most 10 hours/week. The exact start date may be flexible depending on the appilicant. The work for this position may be done remotely and on your own schedule, with the exception of a regular weekly meeting during normal business hours. The rate of pay is $34.20/hr, plus vacation and benefits.
Job Requirements: To be considered for this position, you must meet the following qualifications:
  • Enrolled in or completed an undergraduate program in computer science, biotechnology, bioinformatics, genomics, or a related discipline.
  • Strong programming skills.
  • Experience with software engineering and application development, and in particular mobile and web applications, is required.
  • Experience with user interface/user experience design is required.
  • Experience with Python data science and machine learning toolkits (e.g., Jupyter notebooks, pandas/polars, scikit-learn/tensorflow/pytorch) are assets.
  • Experience developing educational materials, or being a teaching assistant or instructor, are assets.
